How to Care For Cut Flowers When the Weather is Hot

Posted by Linda Greens | Flowers | Monday 19 July 2010 2:44 am

Fresh flowers in the house are such a pleasure, the subtle scent of them and the glorious look of colour and texture, we respond to flowers with pleasure. Of course you will want them to last as long as possible and even in hot environments there are things you can do to achieve this.

First of all, did you know that flowers and fruit do not like each other? If your bouquet or bunch is near a bowl of ripening fruit, they are in danger.

Fruit gives off a lot of a gas called ethylene and this is what kills cut flowers, the flower produces the same gas but in smaller quantities and this is what makes them eventually die off, so if you have fruit too close, you will hasten the process. The worst culprits are bananas! Keep them elsewhere.

Make sure your vases are clean, rinse with water containing a few drops of bleach. Always have the vase of water ready, cut off half an inch of stem and straight into the water, this is to be sure the flower can drink.

In hot weather or hot rooms, the water in a vase of flowers will produce more than usual bacteria thus making the water go cloudy and blocking the cells in the stems. The flowers can’t drink properly and even if they could, they must have clean water to last well.

You can achieve this in two ways, one is to use a cut flower food which keeps the water clean. In this case just top up the water each day. The other way, if you have no flower food, it to replace the water daily. Clean out the vase as you do and most important, cut some stem off each flower as you replace it in the vase.Flower food also helps with longer vase life, if you have none you can put a soluble aspirin in the water.

Now where should you put the vase? We all tend to display them in the window, nice for all to see of course but if they are likely to be in full sun at any time of the day, this is not the place to put them. Full sun on a flower in the garden is fine, but for cut flowers it is too stressful and will shorten their life drastically.

The same applies to anywhere over or near a source of heat in the room, like a radiator, too hot and the result will be drooping blooms.

So what is the ideal?

Clean water in the vase treated as above, not in the window or above the radiators, away from fresh fruit and in the coolest place available.

Follow these tips and your flowers will look their best and last as long as possible. You need to start out with really fresh blooms though, so when sending flowers, choose a company that grows and picks a lot of their own, see my recommendation below and enjoy your lovely flowers by post.

Scrapbooks – The Perfect Gift

Posted by admin | Thematic | Friday 19 June 2009 11:03 pm

There is something magical about special occasions – it’s no wonder that we call them special. Long lost family reunites and gripes and moans are put aside, all for the celebration of that important event. Food is shared around an all-embracing table, where everyone digs in with enthusiasm, while conversation bubble everywhere, trickling into one another as people share their thoughts on almost everything under the sun. Whether it’s a wedding or a holiday dinner, there is something about these special occasions that makes you wish they could last forever.

The real pity is they can’t, but the next joy of these happy occasions comes in the remembering. And what better way to commemorate the event the family gathering marked by gathering these memories into one bound volume so that it might be treasured forever and limitlessly shared? This is why the gift of a scrapbook is such a perfect one.

A scrapbook is so easy to make, and gives so very much. We have all experienced the hard work involved in hosting a dinner party or organising a wedding, and can appreciate how much we miss in our busy attention to the important details of running an event, or being the center of its attention. By creating a scrapbook, you can share with your harried host the feelings of joy and frivolity that their guests enjoyed, allowing you to say thank you in a unique and personal way.

At its heart, the gift of a scrapbook is the gift of memory – gathering up remnants of a happy event, a scrapbook captures something of the essence of an occasion, recreating something of the pleasure that such an event created. The simple collation of photos, flowers, and other mementos creates a gift that surpasses all others, comprised of things that are far more important for the memories they engender.

If you are looking for the ideal thank you gift, then look no further than a scrapbook. Other gifts might ultimately fall from use, but the gift of memories will live forever.

Romantic Gifts – Maintain Your Relationship

Posted by admin | Personalized Gifts | Friday 19 June 2009 4:52 am

We all buy gifts for our spouses on holidays or special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, or Christmas. Sometimes we even give gifts to say that we are sorry after an argument. The best gifts given in a relationship are gifts that simply let your spouse know that you are thinking of them, appreciate them, and love them. These gifts are meaningful to the person who receives them, and they work because they are chosen with a great deal of thought, care and without expectations of reciprocation.

This can be accomplished simply and with little effort. Whenever you are out shopping alone, look for things you think he or she would love to have or would appreciate. Pay attention when you are out with him or her and notice anything that catches their eyes. Then come back later and buy it for them as a surprise! They will be truly touched.

Visit your spouse’s favorite stores to find just what they would like. Or go to stores that carry rare or unique items, including antique stores, bookstores, second-hand shops, toy stores, video stores, sporting goods stores, card shops, etc. When you go shopping, don’t put too much thought into it. Let your intuition be your guide in shopping for your spouse!

Always be prepared to buy something for your spouse when you are out. Keep a ‘gift’ fund in your wallet so that you are always prepared to buy that special item that you might come across. Keep a list of things that you can refer to, also.

Don’t overdo it with the gift giving. If your spouse is receiving gifts all of the time, it will lose its spontaneity and intention. Just remember to always think about your spouse’s wants and needs when shopping for him or her.

Curious With Smart Christmas Gift

Posted by admin | Holidays and Observances | Friday 19 June 2009 4:48 am

Christmas can be a pretty stressful time as we are all rushing around trying to make sure we have everything in hand for when the great occasion arrives. Now though with the aid of the internet the chore of buying all those Christmas gifts for your loved ones can be done with both speed, ease and sometimes at a fraction of the cost.

Before we would simply walk into a store and match a product to whoever we were buying it for. Now with the help of the internet we can within minutes track down the product that we “know” a person will want and in theory our shopping time should be shortened and the end result should be a present that is truly wanted and received with great joy. The other benefit of Christmas gift shopping via the internet is the fact that we can easily and swiftly compare the different prices that the various vendors have on their websites. It is not unheard of to find a price difference of up to fifty percent so do not be rushed into buying the very first product your eyes lay focus on as you could surely be paying a far lower price elsewhere.

The trick with all internet shopping and one that many folk forget is “save that site to your favorites” , This single action alone can save you a fortune. How many times on the past have you found a product or service never to see it again? why? simply because you visited a few different websites and could not remember how you found the item/product in the first place. Christmas gift shopping entails visiting far more sites than usual so simply create a new folder in your “favorites” folder and add the sites as you go.

Another advantage of this is that if you do this well before Christmas you can even line up a variety of different Christmas gifts in order that when you do decide to buy you will not be stuck for choice. You will not believe how easy this can make your online Christmas shopping experience and no longer will you dread the Christmas gift hunting season as it approaches.

In addition to using your “favorites” folder as your secret Christmas shopping weapon the next tip is this. Start your online information gathering as early as you think you can handle. Start in October and build up a list of different gift options, Work on one person at a time and if possible even sound them out regarding what it is that they might wish Santa to bring them for the jolly old Christmas occasion.

Also remember this. At this time of year there are so many stores and businesses fighting for your custom that bargains will be plentiful and the need to buy the very first time you see a target item should be absolutely the last thing on your mind. Do not buy from the very first website you visit, just shop around and look where is cheap price.
